York is a city of ancient, winding streets, Roman ruins, Viking ghosts and a budding, vibrant belly dance community. Both Larissa Collins and Ally Shaw teach regular evening classes in York, each in their own styles.

Larissa teaches Egyptian bellydance, including oriental and folkloric styles. She has been bellydancing for 13 years and teaching for 5 years. Larissa first went along to a class just to see what it was all about was hooked! She has completed the Open College Network accredited Certificate in 'Safe Delivery of Belly Dance Classes' and the modules 'Understanding Music Used in Bellydance', 'The Influence of History and Culture in Bellydance'  and 'Teaching Methods Used Within Bellydance' run by JWAAD. Larissa dances with Sandra Thompson's group 'Heneya'. You can find out more about Larissa's Bellydance classes and performances at http://www.snakesandrosesbellydance.co.uk.
Ally Shaw teaches American Tribal Style Belly Dance®, which is the original style of tribal belly dance. It’s an improvisational group dance which began in San Francisco in the late 80s, created by Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman.  Ally is originally from California and remembers watching Fat Chance Belly Dance, the original ATS® troupe, dance at Cafe Istanbul in the Mission in the early 90s.  She is the first FCBD® Sister Studio in North Yorkshire, and she also dances with Beverley Spracklen’s Gothic Fusion troupe Tanzhexen as well as Chris Ogden’s 400 Roses. You can read more about ATS@ in York at http://brigantestribal.wordpress.com/

Larissa and Ally met each other at the Tribal Encounters Hafla run by the wonderful Pauline and Asif Qu and they have finally decided it’s about time York had a hafla (again!) that would offer dancers in the Yorkshire area a chance to share their Egyptian and Tribal styles. Contact either Larissa larissacollins8@gmail.com or Ally brigantestribal@gmail.com if you would like to perform.

Come and be part of the start of something exciting for the belly dance community in York. York promises delights for a day trip-- Hauntingly beautiful abbey ruins nestle by the Yorkshire Museum. Walk the medieval walls and be awed by the stone carvings of the Minster. Arrive early in the day to enjoy the myriad tea rooms, historical sites, pubs, snickleways and shops before making your way to the hafla in the evening (there will be ample room to change into your dance finery at the venue).
